Knowing The Disorder : Autisum
Autisum can often be a difficult disorder to come to terms with, but one that can be handled effectively. Where we sit at the moment, there is no cure for the condition. It is simply something one has to manage, and there is a vast array of autism treatments available. One of the reasons that it has been such a difficult disorder to find a cure for is that what causes autism is still a highly debated question. There is a strong argument for its link to genetics. People with an autistic person in their family are more likely to suffer from the disorder. Research has also shown that a set of twins can offer show similar characteristics of autism. While the link is definitely there, scientists have battled to find a specific gene that carries the disorder. A very contentious issue is whether or not vaccines cause autism. This issue has created a major divide, generally between the medical profession and parents of autistic children. The debate is still raging, and it does not look like either party is going to back down. Whatever the cause may be, constant research is going into the field of autisum, to try and find out more about this fascinating neurological disorder.
So what exactly are the signs of this condition? They typically manifest themselves at a very early age, and can be generally identified in affected toddlers. The way in which different people suffer with this disorder differs astronomically from person to person. Symptoms of mild autism can alter quite a bit from those of the more severe cases. Where autism makes itself apparent is in the social and verbal interactions of the autistic person. In very young children, you will find an inability or reluctance to start speaking to be an indicator that autism may be present. You will also find that the ability to associate words with what they represent is very difficult for the autistic person.
Socially, they often seem to be off in their own worlds, and not particularly present in the context that surrounds them. Again, this will differ from case to case, depending on the severity of the condition. They will battle to react to new stimuli. An autistic child may not notice a new person coming into the room, or a drastic change of scenery. Physical and verbal repetition can be important indicators in identifying those with autisum. This may show itself through constantly repeating a word or phrase, or an action such as tapping on a desk.
Before deciding which treatment option is best, it is important to look at the specifics of the case to see which would best serve the person in question. Treatments range from very conventional therapies, such as ABA, to more alternative forms. It is also becoming increasingly popular to look at the diet of the autistic person, and modify it in certain ways as a means of symptomatic treatment. While autisum cannot be cured just yet, there are options available that allow autistic people, and those close to them, to manage the disorder.
